Aloha State: Getting Grounded

Back in February I took a trip to Hawai’i on a one way ticket. Living in Los Angeles gets extremely hectic at times and I felt the need for a getaway. The purpose of not having a return flight was to give myself time to explore the islands with no rush whatsoever. I had never been to the Aloha State before, so I really wanted to fully enjoy this adventure. Join me on a journey through Hawai’i that left a lasting impact on my life — even today!

Wanderlust

My trip started off at the Wanderlust Festival in Oahu where I had a pleasure of assisting my dear friend, Briohny Smyth, in some yoga classes. I spent the weekend camping, waking up, and going to sleep right next to the ocean. The rest of my trip (which turned out to be exactly a month) I did a bit of island hopping between Oahu and Kauai.

Why Not Both?

Both Oahu and Kauai were wonderful in their own way; one is a populated, Los Angeles-like place with tons of activity and bustle, while the other is slow paced, restorative island that’s full of peace and perspective.

The entire time I was in Hawai’i, on every island and beach, felt very healing. Hawai’i is definitely infused with a healing, rejuvenating vibe — no wonder people refer to it as paradise. Upon my return to California I was ready for another chapter, feeling grounded and calm yet refreshed.

Melancholy and Demotivation

Shortly after landing back in California, little did I know that I would fall into a mysterious melancholic and unmotivated state. I tried to give myself some time to adjust back to urban living. However, after several weeks, things were still not looking up.

Then a friend of mine suggested a hike barefoot. Although I spent much of my time in Hawai’i barefoot, it wasn’t something I would think of doing in California. “Have you ever heard of Earthing?” my friend asked.

Finding My Cure

I agreed to walk the mountains barefoot that day for hours, and the results were amazing. All of a sudden I felt well rested and energized at the same time. Then I realized, the entire month on the Hawaiian islands I was walking the Earth with no shoes. This concept got me so curious, I had to do some research.

I discovered that earthing (or grounding) is the practice of coupling your body to the Earth’s surface energy by walking, sitting or sleeping outside in direct contact with the Earth.

Benefits of Earthing

"Physical disconnect with the Earth creates abnormal physiology and contributes to inflammation, pain, fatigue, stress and poor sleep. By reconnecting to the Earth, symptoms are rapidly relieved and even eliminated." - Martin Zucker

It turns out that earthing has numerous benefits beyond those that I personally experienced including:

  • Reducing inflammation by defusing excess positive electrons
  • Reducing chronic pain
  • Improving sleep
  • Increasing energy
  • Lowering stress and promoting calm by reducing stress hormones.
  • Normalizing biological rhythms including circadian rhythm
  • Improving blood pressure and blood flow
  • Relieving muscle tension and headache
  • Lessening menstrual and female hormone symptoms
  • Speeding up healing
  • Eliminating jet lag
  • Protecting the body from EMFs
  • Shortening recovery time from injury or athletic activity
  • Reducing or eliminating snoring
  • Helping support adrenal health

Wow… It was seriously as simple as that? Just touching the Earth on a regular basis can make such an impact on your life. Looks like I taking my shoes off now!
