A Guide to Aromatherapy

A Guide to Aromatherapy

aromatherapy oils

Aromatherapy is a popular form of natural treatment for both physical and psychological ailments, as well as improvements for your general wellbeing. It’s an ancient system of medicine that stems from harnessing the power of plants for their curative benefits. If you’re curious about aromatherapy oil uses, read our essential oils aromatherapy guide for more information.

What Is Aromatherapy | Essential Oils Aromatherapy Guide

At its core, aromatherapy uses scents to provide a greater sense of well-being. Specifically, aromatherapy involves utilizing volatile oils and essential oils to promote health. While the term aromatherapy implies that the benefits of the oils can only be absorbed through scent, aromatherapy essential oils can also be assimilated into the bloodstream through the skin, as well as ingested.

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy uses natural essential oils to bring the benefits of a plant straight to you. These are the pure essences of each plant, formed through special distillation processes. They can include pure oil extracted from plants, aromatic waters formed from the distillation process, and carbon dioxide extracts.

While essential oils are a popular aromatherapy treatment method, they aren’t the only vehicle for a plant’s essence. Herbs, milk powders, sea salts, and clays are also used for aromatherapy. These are not perfumed oils — since perfume generally contains synthetic material — these are organic, natural elements meant to improve your quality of life.

The History of Aromatherapy

We wouldn’t be able to provide you with a comprehensive essential oils aromatherapy guide if we didn’t briefly cover the history of aromatherapy.

The term “aromatherapy” itself isn’t all that old — it really just dates back to the early 20th century in 1928 — but the practice of aromatherapy has existed for millennia. It’s been found in numerous ancient cultures including China and Egypt, who made use of frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, cinnamon, cedarwood, and juniper berry, to heal through aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy oil uses have been used for treatments of all types of ailments throughout history. Egyptians used aromatherapy oils to keep their skin hydrated. In addition, Hippocrates promoted the use of fennel, parsley, hypericum, or valerian for the ill. Even doctors used aromatherapy treatments against the Black Plague in the 14th century. Archaeological evidence has even pointed to aromatic distillation in Cyprus at least 4,000 years ago.

Popular Essential Oils & Their Benefits

There are over 100 essential oils out there that all contain different benefits for their users. Some of these oils are so widespread, you’ve probably even heard of them or seen their names attached to brands of shampoo and other body washes. However, in this essential oils aromatherapy guide, we’ll just go over a few of the most popular and the benefits they can impart.

Lavender Oil

One of the most popular essential oils of all time is lavender. The lavender we’re talking about in the context of aromatherapy oil uses is actually only one species of lavender from over 39 different lavender species! Due to several different properties, lavender oil has sedative benefits, as well as anti-anxiety, antibacterial, and antioxidant benefits.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is the base of another important oil that can’t be excluded from any essential oils aromatherapy guide. It’s been shown that the natural menthol of this extract reduces external pain and when inhaled, convinces the brain that your body feels cooler. We use these benefits in our  Chillax Muscle Recovery Gel — a roll-on gel that you can use to ease sore joints and muscles.

Bergamot Oil

Bergamot essential oil is made from the rind of the fruit, and is so popular that it’s used in perfumes as well as in aromatherapy. Most often, bergamot is used as a mood lifter, as it acts as a brain stimulant — making you happier when you inhale its fragrance. In fact, most citrus essential oils have this effect, and that’s part of why citrus oils are a main ingredient in our Aromatic Body Mist.

Ylang Ylang Oil

Ylang Ylang is a relatively new essential oil that was not widely used until recent years. When used in combination with other oils, different benefits can be derived from it including its antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, hypotensive, and sedative properties. In our Pocket Savasana Body Balance Aroma Concentrate, we use Ylang Ylang in combination with bergamot, sage, and neroli to lift mood and soothe the mind.

Other Popular Oils

Other popular essential oils that deserve a mention in our essential oils aromatherapy guide include sage and eucalyptus for inflammation, rosemary oil for hair growth, myrrh for the immune system, and geranium for anxiety and hormone balance. We use some of these in combination with other oils in our products, but you can also find them individually for personal use.

Essential Oils Aromatherapy Guide | Essential Oil Use On A Daily Basis

While this essential oils aromatherapy guide has covered some of the most well-known essential oils and their benefits, it’s important to learn about the different ways you can use them too! Aromatherapy oils can be used topically, inhaled, or ingested depending on the type of oil and distillation method.

Topical Use

Topical use of aromatherapy oils is one of the most popular, especially when using oils that directly affect the skin and muscles. Most oils are too powerful to be used directly on your skin and should be diffused through a carrier like almond, jojoba, olive oils, as well as creams or lotions. We prefer to use powerful hydrating cremes, like the Concentrated Body Cleansing Creme, to bring our essential oil benefits to you.

If you’re using a concentrated essential oil blend, like those in our roll-on, you should place the oil at energy-centric points throughout your body. Your temples, forehead, throat, wrists, and feet are great place to start.

You can infuse aromatherapy oils into your surroundings in several ways to ensure their scent is always present. You can spritz our Aromatic Mist onto your yoga mat, sleeping pillow, or

natural body spray

clothing, but you can also use a diffuser with a few drops of your favorite oil to bring a specific scent to your entire room.

Use your aromatherapy body spray every day to help you recall your yoga practice, but diffuse specific essential oil scents only when you need an additional dose of relaxation or an extra mood lift. Lavender, jasmine, and citrus oils are the best for these effects.

Ingesting essential oils is a little controversial and should always be done under the care of a physician. While essential oils are natural, they are in a plant’s most concentrated form and should be treated with caution. Usually ingestion of essential oils is only recommended for people who suffer from diseases that require heavy dosing.

For topical products and inhalation, aromatherapy can be used every single day — especially when properly diffused in a carrier cream, oil, or lotion. When using essential oils internally, you should always consult a doctor for proper dosing instructions.
