Coconut Oil Benefits for Your Skin

Coconut oil has fatty acids, saturated fats, lauric acid, caprylic acid, vitamin E, and a variety of proteins to help it work on your skin and hair.

Fatty Acids

Coconut oil contains caprylic and lauric fatty acids to help reduce inflammation and moisturize the skin. They’re a great solution for a number of skin conditions caused by inflammation. These fatty acids also have antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental stressors.

Saturated Fats

Saturated fats generally work on the surface of the skin making it feel smooth and silky. They also help the skin retain moisture better, eliminating moisture loss through your pores. When eating foods with saturated fats, they also deposit themselves just below the skin’s surface — keeping it even-toned and plump.

Caprylic and Lauric Acids

While these also have the same benefits of the fatty acids, they also have additional disinfecting and antimicrobial properties that can help prevent acne breakouts and sanitize open cuts. These can be effective when coconut oil is used topically or taken internally.

Vitamin E

You already know that vitamin E has a number of antioxidant properties that protect your skin from UV rays and other damaging free radicals. Another vitamin E benefit of coconut oil for your skin ensures prevention of premature aging.

Proteins

Proteins contribute to cellular health and tissue repair throughout the body, but using coconut oil on the skin throws these benefits into overdrive. Damaged cells that are exposed to the proteins in coconut oil ensures replacement at a normal to quick rate — reducing scarring.
