Skincare Essentials for Holiday Travel

Top Travel Skincare Tips

It can take months, if not years, to find the perfect skincare routine for your skin type, daily stressors, and budget. Don’t let all of your hard work go to waste this holiday season by throwing your regimen out the window. If you’re planning on traveling, find time to take care of your skin and stay mindful of your beauty regimen. Keep your skincare essentials on hand throughout your holiday travels, and follow these travel skincare tips to keep your skin feeling fresh, invigorated, and nourished.

Get the Prep You Need

You never know how many delays and layovers you’ll be faced with on the way to your holiday destination. The first stop on our list of travel skincare tips takes place before you even leave home: make sure you’re feeling great and smelling fresh before your departure. You’ll be able to overcome any obstacle the world throws at you — and you can do it with a smile on your face.

Depending on where you’re staying for your holiday travels, you may really miss taking long, hot showers in the comfort of your own home. Enjoy it while you can! Soap up, and after you shower, make sure you moisturize and apply a long-lasting, reliable deodorant that will keep you feeling fresh all day long.

Make Hydration a Top Priority

Flying can do a number on your skin, especially if you don’t prepare for your time on board adequately. The recirculated air in plane cabins creates a moisture-free environment — to the point that the air itself actually drains the moisture out of your skin. The longer you’re on board, the more it will show; dry skin will get even drier and oily skin will produce excess oil to compensate for the dehydration. To keep your skin soft, smooth, and hydrated throughout your travels, drink plenty of water, and don’t forget to moisturize!

If you’re boarding an extra-long flight, here’s another travel skincare tip: your run-of-the-mill moisturizer might not be up for the job. For deeper hydration, you may want to use specialized products, like our  Active Calm Face Moisturizer. Active Calm features a lightweight, quick-absorbing formula that hydrates deep and is ideal for a wide range of skin types, including normal, oily, combination, and dry skin.

Protect Your Skin from Excessive Sun Exposure

The next stop on our list of travel skincare tips is something that’s simple, but often overlooked: sunscreen. Did you know that you can get a nasty sunburn if you don’t protect your skin with sunscreen before a flight? Because of the higher altitude, the ultraviolet rays you’re coming into contact with are much more potent than what you’d experience walking down the street. Also, because the windows on traditional airplanes don’t block out UVA rays (which can penetrate deep into your skin and cause premature aging, wrinkling, and sunspots) you endure lasting damage by not being prepared.

If you’re a frequent flier, sunscreen is non-negotiable. Even if you’re not traveling by plane at all, sunscreen is still a necessity for your trip. While you’re out sightseeing, you’re likely to experience an increase in sun exposure — especially in areas with lots of snow. Protect your skin by donning a pair of shades and sunscreen.

Skip the Heavy Makeup

Here’s another travel skincare tip that you should stay mindful of: when

you’re travelling, fresh-faced is the way to be. Foundations and powders may boost your confidence levels, but they can also dry out your pores, causing flaky, dry skin. Don’t undo all of the hard work and effort you put into keeping your skin hydrated — skip the heavy makeup.

A full-face of makeup is a bad idea, as it increases the likelihood that you’ll be touching your face throughout your trip. When you’re traveling, your hands pick up a crazy amount of bacteria, and the more you touch your face, the more likely you are to cause a break out, or even get sick. If makeup is a must, apply an extremely light amount, or wash it off and reapply when the time is right. Our  Shower Sheets and water free cleansers are the perfect solution to in-flight cleanup.

Remove Excess Oil Without Over-Washing

If you have oily skin and you start to notice excessive shine appearing in your T-zone, here’s a travel skincare tip: blotting is your best friend. Washing your face might help you feel fresh and clean in the moment, but over-washing will strip away your skin’s essential oils, and cause your pores to dry out.

The best way to get excess oil under control (which can be a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria) is by using a tissue, rice paper, or oil-control blotting papers to dab at your problem areas. Just be careful not to touch your skin with your bare hands without washing them first.

Exfoliate Post Flight

Even if you moisturize and hydrate properly before your flight, you’re still bound to accumulate some dead skin cell buildup while you’re in the air. For flights that are a few hours long, it’s simply inevitable. Here’s our travel skincare tip: once you’ve landed and you have the opportunity to get settled into your hotel, use our  GLOW WITH THE FLOW Face and Body Scrub to gently lift away dry surface cells to reveal a deeper radiance in your skin. This daily skin refiner will not irritate or dry out your skin, and it’s made with natural essential oils that gently stimulate the senses and ease stress. What better way to freshen up and unwind post flight?

Complimentary Hotel Beauty Products — To Use or Not to Use?

The best thing about complimentary hotel beauty products is that they’re convenient. However, convenience might be their only good quality. Yes, they are free, replenishable, and easy to find when you need them the most, but if you have sensitive skin, or a carefully designed skincare regimen, switching out your tried-and-true products for a few convenient ones will likely do more harm than good.

Our final travel skincare tip: stick to the products you know work well,

even if it requires a bit more planning on your part. If you want to save on space, browse through our  travel size selection of YUNI fan favorites, or invest in a few carry-on containers (only 1-ounce) to bottle your products.
